Cotton velvet needs dry cleaning rather than washing — water flattens and marks the pile, and it will not spring back. Take the cover off first and send only the cover; never put a feather insert through any cleaning process. Between cleans, brush the pile gently with a soft clothes brush, always in one direction, to lift crushed patches and dust. If something spills, blot straight away with a dry cloth and let the mark dry before you touch it again; rubbing damp velvet permanently scars the surface. Steam held a few centimetres away revives a flattened area better than an iron, which crushes pile on contact. Rotate the cushion weekly so one face does not wear or fade faster than the other, and keep it out of direct sun, which lightens deep dyes quickly. Sitting marks and shading across the pile are the nature of velvet, not a fault in the fabric.
