Washed linen is hardy but it likes a gentle routine. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colours, using a mild liquid detergent — no bleach, no oxygen brighteners and no fabric softener, which coats the flax fibre and stops it breathing. Wash it separately the first time; natural dyes release a little colour early on. Line dry in the shade or tumble on low and take it out slightly damp, then either warm-iron on the reverse for a crisp finish or leave it to dry flat if you prefer linen's relaxed look. Never dry it on a hot radiator, which makes flax brittle. Treat spills while they are wet with cold water and a touch of detergent; hot water sets protein and tannin marks permanently. Store it folded, dry and unsealed — plastic traps moisture and yellows the fibre. Linen softens, drapes better and creases more happily with every wash; that is rather the point of it.
