Cotton and jute is a spot-clean blend, not a washable one. Jute swells, stiffens and can bleed colour when it gets properly wet, so no machine cycle and no soaking — blot spills immediately with a clean, barely damp cloth and let the piece air-dry flat and fully before it goes away. Shake it out or vacuum on the lowest suction through a mesh guard to lift crumbs and dust between uses. Never bleach it; the natural fibre goes brittle and patchy. Use it under a hot dish only with a trivet in between, because direct heat scorches jute. Loose fibre shedding in the first few weeks is normal and stops on its own. Store the pieces flat rather than rolled, somewhere dry, and keep them out of prolonged direct sun, which bleaches the warm clay tone unevenly across the weave.
