Cotton gauze is deliberately open and loosely woven, which makes it light on a bed and a little delicate in the wash. Machine wash cold on a gentle or delicates cycle, inside a mesh bag, with a mild liquid detergent and no bleach or fabric softener. Keep the load small so the fabric is not dragged against zips and buttons; a snagged gauze thread pulls a run through several rows. Line dry in the shade or tumble on the lowest heat and remove it while slightly damp — gauze puckers permanently if it is baked dry. The crinkled texture is intended, so skip the iron unless you want it flat, and then press warm on the reverse. Blot spills gently instead of rubbing. Over time the weave relaxes and softens further, which is normal. Store it folded and dry, and keep it out of strong direct sun, which weakens fine cotton yarn.
